Prince William has broken royal tradition in his new Father’s Day photo posing with his three children George, Charlotte and Louis, a body language expert has said.

The doting dad stood with his three children, which he shares with Kate Middleton, looking out at the sea on a secluded beach.

The snap was uploaded onto the couple’s official Instagram, taken by the Princess of Wales herself, to mark Father’s Day.

The never-before-seen picture included a message from Prince William‘s children, in a first official message on social media from the youngsters.

Taken by Kate in Norfolk last month, the foursome look away from the camera, which is different from the usual portraits and photographs shared of the Windsor family.

The royal youngsters wrote: “We love you, Papa. Happy Father’s Day. G, C & L.”

It’s the first instance they’ve done this on official social media for the palace.

Now, a body language expert has told The Sun, the hands-on dad is acting ‘protective’ of his tight, family unit.

Judi James said: “William is very much the protector here, stretching both arms out to encircle his children in a ‘winged’ gesture, as though hiding them under his wings.”

She added: “Instead of William and the children facing the camera to project their pose in a non-verbal conversation with the viewer they are seen ‘caught’ in a moment of more spontaneous affection here as we are allowed to share the view with them rather than watching them pose up self-consciously or to romp playfully as they have tended to do in previous photos.

“It’s a pose that seems to signal the beginning of the end of childhood and the freedom enjoyed before the move into royal adulthood.”

In other fatherly snaps of royal members, we usually see King Charles or Prince Philip wearing formal suits and playing with their children. But 42-year-old William was wearing green shorts, sneakers and a blue hoodie.

Wills also shared a photo with his dad for the big day, taken on June 12, 1984, where he is playing football with the now monarch.

‘Happy Father’s Day, Pa,’ he wrote.

It comes as Kate Middleton made her first appearance in more than 170 days, when she appeared on the balcony at the Trooping the Colour over the weekend.

The special celebration marks the King’s second official birthday.
