Travis Kelce‘s moving reason he wears an 87 jersey in football is heartwarming, and it could bring a tear to your eye.
The tight end is preparing for the big game in a couple of weeks where the Kansas City Chiefs will face the 49ers at the Super Bowl. After the team’s huge success against the Baltimore Ravens last week, as well as dating Taylor Swift, sales of his No 87 jersey have soared through the roof. But Travis picked out the number for the jersey for a meaningful reason, and it’s about his older brother, who is also a football star for the Philadelphia Eagles.
Last year, the brothers had to battle against each other for the Super Bowl when the Chiefs and Eagles made it to the end. But there were no hard feelings as they’re professional athletes.
Travis explained: “If there is a Kelce legacy – two brothers making it to the NFL – it started in 1987 because this big guy was born in 1987.”
Jason wears the 62, but Travis can’t wear 89 so he picked his brother’s birth year.
Travis was born the same year as his girlfriend Taylor, who released an album with the title.
The 34-year-old explained in another interview that his brother Jason was a key part of his own football career. The duo both played for the University of Cincinnati, but the younger sibling was once suspended after violating team rules. His brother stepped in to help then.
CBS Sports reports Travis said: “I got my scholarship taken, too. I was actually staying with my brother. I was in his room, his house.
“Kind of like two brothers growing up living in the same room. In terms of rent, I wasn’t paying it. In terms of food, he was helping me with that.”
Travis called Jason his “lifeline”, and talked to numerous coaches to give Trav another chance.
Jason spoke about the tough time of his younger brother’s life. He called him “young and very rambunctious” and said he’s “gotten more mature”.
Travis added: “I’m forever in debt to this guy for putting his name, our name – the Kelce name – on the line. When I say I owe it all to him, I really do”.
The no 87 has also soared in popularity after fans have seen Swift supporting the number. She was recently spotted wearing a ring with the numbers on it after it was gifted to her by Travis’ mom Donna Kelce. She also sported a custom jacket which appeared to send shockwaves in the Swiftie kingdom.
It comes after the Chiefs’ head coach revealed Taylor Swift savagely teased Travis Kelce at the beginning of their romance because she knew him before dating the tight end.
