A woman who was living inside a Family Fare supermarket roof sign was called a ‘roof ninja’ by police officers who found her.

The 34-year-old had been living there for some time, and told officers her family and ‘other people’ knew about the spot but wouldn’t go into further detail.

The woman, who has not been named, was discovered in the attic-like space on April 23, when construction workers followed a cable leading to her supermarket secret room.

She had been residing in the sign, 5ft by 8ft, for more than a year.

The ‘roof ninja’ even had a coffee maker, computer, phone, bedding and a printer in the Family Fare space, cops say.

When asked how she knew about the area, she declared it was ‘an old safe spot’ but then remarked it was ‘not anymore’ now she’s been found.

Officers joked she was given the nickname roof ninja as when she emerged, she was wearing black clothing and ski goggles on her head.

Cops said to her: “Tell me that ain’t cool”, and she reportedly replied: “That’s true”.

Brennon Warren of the Midland Police Department said: “I honestly don’t know how she was getting up there. She didn’t indicate, either”.

The woman was asked for transportation to put her belongings in storage and told officers she had a job.

“There was some flooring that was laid down. A mini desk. Her clothing. A Keurig coffee maker. A printer and a computer – things you’d have in your home,” Officer Warren said.

No charges has been pursued against the woman.

Mr Warren added she apologized.

A spokesperson for SpartanNash, the parent company of Family Fare, said store employees responded “with the utmost compassion and professionalism”.

“Ensuring there is ample safe, affordable housing continues to be a widespread issue nationwide that our community needs to partner in solving.”
