A Michigan man has probably made the best decision he’s ever made after using the $100 winnings he received in the lottery to gamble it again, this time to walk away with $1,000,000.
The man, from Oakland County, chose to remain anonymous but told the Michigan Lottery he thought the machine was broken when it told him he won the top prize.
The 59-year-old had initially bought four tickets and cashed in $100 from Michigan Lottery’s $1,000,000 Cash Multiplier instant game.
He then went on to buy more tickets at the Meijer store on Haggerty Road in Commerce Township.
“I bought four tickets and won $100, so I used some of my winnings to purchase more tickets, including this $1,000,000 Cash Multiplier ticket,” the player said.
“I scratched off only the barcode and then scanned it on the Michigan Lottery app. When confetti came up on the screen with a prize of $1 million, I thought the scanner was broken.
“I scratched off the full ticket and that’s when I saw I really did win. It was awesome!”
He recently visited the Lottery headquarters to receive his prize and chose to have it as a one-time lump sum payment instead of annuity payments. therefore, he took home $693,000 rather than the full $1,000,000 if he chose the payments.
With his newfound wealth, he plans to buy a retirement home with a pool and sponsor a child overseas.
The Lottery says players have won more than $9 million playing the Cash Multiplier which only launched in January. Players are offered the chance to win prizes between $10 to $1 million with each $10 ticket. They say two more tickets are out there holding the top prize of $1 million, as well as 143 with $5,000.
In 2022, Lottery players won more than $1.7 billion playing instant games.
It comes after a student won $500,000 on the first lottery ticket he’s ever bought. He didn’t even know how to use the lottery card and had to ask his parents.
