Eurovision winner Nemo broke the trophy minutes after being handed the accolade and celebrating.

The Switzerland representative smashed the trophy when cheering to the crowd during the final on Saturday.

The 24-year-old, who is the competition’s first non-binary winner, scored 365 points from the juries and 226 from the public vote for a grand total of 591. The winning song was The Code.

After Nemo collected the Eurovision trophy from Sweden’s winner Loreen, they took to the stage for the final, second performance.

Before heading over to the microphone the star dropped to their knees and waved the microphone trophy into the air, and as they stood back up slammed it on the stage, using it as a balance to stand up, unexpectedly breaking it.

When they stood up, half of the trophy was lying on the stage, the stem, but the top half was still in their hand.

The music show’s producers reportedly changed the makeup of the gong to prevent it from snapping after a trophy previously broke at Eurovision 15 years ago – but seems Nemo’s didn’t hold up.

Alexander Rybak, from Norway, had broken the trophy in 2009, so the show installed two metal rings to strengthen the connection between the top and bottom ever since.

The hand-made Eurovision trophy, which Nemo mistakenly broke, is unique, in the shape of a glass microphone, with painted detailing.

Designed by Kjell Engman of Kosta Boda in 1946, a glass artist with three decades of experience.

But the celebrity isn’t the only person to go home with an accolade, the songwriter and composer will each receive smaller versions.

After winning, Nemo gave a tearful speech: “I want to say thank you so much.

“I hope this contest can live up to its promise and continue to stand for peace and dignity for every person in this world.”

Croatia came in second with 547 points, with Rim Tim Tagi Dim by Baby Lasagna, and Ukraine in third, with Alyona Alyona and Jerry Heil with their track Teresa & Maria.

France and the Israel made the top five countries.

Nemo said of breaking the Eurovision trophy: “I broke the code and I broke the trophy, the trophy can be fixed… maybe the Eurovision needs a bit of fixing too.”
