A three-year-old girl was shot and killed after gunshots rang out in Southeast Washington DC.
The toddler was not the intended target but was hit by crossfire when sitting in a vehicle, officers say.
Stray bullets struck the youngster near the scene of the crime, Metropolitan Police Department’s Seventh District Commander, LaShay Makal said.
The girl was not conscious or breathing when officers arrived at 24th and Irving St, Southeast, at around 9pm on Friday night.

She was flown to hospital but despite the best efforts of medical staff, she passed away.
A huge police presence responded to the incident as detectives investigate the incident.
A neighbor told Fox news: “It’s very heartbreaking. My children travel, they catch the bus out here every single day, out here at the vending machine, every single day.
“To look outside your home and you see a three-year-old being stretchered out, it could have been one of my children, it’s heartbreaking.
“Put the guns down, there’s no need for it. It’s heartbreaking”.
