Donald Trump says he gets names wrong in speeches on purpose

Donald Trump says he mixes up names intentionally, in a recent rally.

The former President of the United States confused Nikki Haley, his last remaining rival for the Republican presidential nomination, with Nancy Pelosi, the former Democratic House Speaker. He also suggested Barack Obama was still in office.

But he said it was on purpose, claiming the Obama comment was sarcasm.

He said at a rally in South Carolina on Wednesday: “When I purposely interposed names, they said I didn’t know Pelosi from Nikki.”

“I’m a great speaker,” Trump added.

The age concern has been in the news in recent weeks ahead of the 2024 election campaign following a report suggesting US President Joe Biden was suffering from memory lapses.

While allies to Biden have raised issues of the gaffes by Trump, who is eying a general election rematch with Biden this November.

Haley has called for mental competency tests for presidential candidates who are aged 75 and older, this would include both Biden and Trump, who are two of the oldest men elected to the White House.

It comes after Biden recently mixed up the names of world leaders, including between France’s former president Francoise Mitterrand and Emmanual Macron, who is the country’s president currently.

Biden has said his memory is “fine”.

It also comes after Donald Trump claimed he was more popular than Taylor Swift.
