The Oscars, which is set to be hosted by TV star Jimmy Kimmel, sees them joke about Barbie director Greta Gerwig not being nominated in this year’s award show.
When the nominations were released earlier this month, fans were outraged Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie were not listed for Best Director and Best Actress.
Movie fans pointed out on Twitter how Ryan Gosling was nominated for Best Actor from a film about feminism and the patriarchy – but Greta and Margot were not included. Greta was nominated for her screenplay and Margot as a producer but the snubs left a sour taste in fans’ mouths.
Co-star America Ferrera was also recognised in the Best Supporting Actress category as well.
One fan disagreed: “[It’s] objectively funny that lead actresses from two excellent films in Anatomy of a Fall and Killers of the Flower Moon (as well as a female director for the former) were nominated, but because the two-hour advertisement for Mattel didn’t we have to pretend it’s some grand injustice.”
The Golden Globes this year introduced a new category around Box Office success, so Barbie was able to bring home more awards on the night.
On Jimmy Kimmel Live, the host dropped a five-minute short hyping up the March 10 awards show. The commercial for the Academy Awards re-created Barbie sets and scenes and invited cast members for the spoof. We see Meryl Streep narrating, Kate McKinnon bringing back her role as Weird Barbie, as well as America Ferrera and Ryan Gosling.
But poking fun at the snub may be in poor taste.
Ferrera pops up to re-create her famous monologue about being a woman to switch it up for being a host at the Oscars.
She tells Jimmy: “It’s literally impossible to host the Oscars.
“You have to be extraordinary, but somehow you’re always doing it wrong. You have to make fun of people, but you can’t make too much fun of people. You have to give everybody enough time, but you can’t go long. And you are the center of attention, but no one cares you’re there.
“You can never show off, never fail, never show fear. No one ever says thank you, but everyone has something critical to say online. If it goes well, nobody says anything. If it doesn’t, it’s all your fault.”
Then Jimmy says it’s almost harder “than being a woman” which leaves the two female stars to reject the idea.
Then Ryan Gosling pops up, saying he’s eating In-N-Out before the show as it’s tradition before he’s told the trend is to eat the takeout after winning instead.
He then quips: “Good thing Greta’s got [best] director in the bag”.
But when informed she hasn’t been nominated, all of them begin to scream.
But it doesn’t change the fact she’s still not up for the gong.
The 96th Oscars are airing March 10, on ABC at 7pm ET and 4pm PT.
