Brian Cox has angered fans by calling the Bible one of the ‘worst books ever’ in a new interview.
The 77-year-old who starred in hit TV show, Succession, appeared on The Starting Line Podcast where he spoke about religion.
Host Rich Leigh asked Brian Cox if anyone religion holds humanity back, he went on to claim the Bible was to blame.
He said: “Oh considerably, yes – I think religion does hold us back because it’s belief systems which are outside ourselves.

“They’re not dealing with who we are, we’re dealing with, “Oh if God says this and God does that, and you go, “Well what is God?” We’ve created that idea of God, and we’ve created it as a control issue, and it’s also a patriarchal issue … and it’s essentially patriarchal – we haven’t given enough scope to the matriarchy.”
He went on to say the patriarchal ideology of society is due to narratives in the Bible.
Brian Cox explained: “We do because we have to honor them and we have to give them their place and we’re resistant to that because all our … it’s Adam and Eve I mean the propaganda goes right way back – the Bible is one of the worst books ever, for me, from my point of view.
“Because it starts with the idea that Adam’s rib – you know that [from] Adam’s rib, this woman was created, and they’ll believe it cause they’re stupid enough.”
But the celebrity clarified people “need it” but don’t need to be told “lies”, adding: “They some kind of truth, and that is not the truth.”
He spoke on a variety of topics, also revealing he hopes billionaires won’t exist in the future due to the distribution of wealth in society.
Fans are divided over his comments, with one Twitter user responding with: “He’s never read it”.
A second added: “People are getting way more comfortable with disrespecting Christianity”.
A third wrote: “How to ruin your career in one paragraph”.
And a fourth defended him with: “It’s silly to say, but he’s not wrong.”
