Lord of the Rings star Sir Ian McKellen has been rushed to hospital after suffering a fall on stage during a performance of Player Kings.

The veteran actor, who is performing on the West End in London, was completing a fight scene with two other stars when he fell off the front of the stage.

Witnesses say he cried for help as the house lights came on and theater-goers were evacuated.

The following show was canceled, as well as Tuesday’s evening performance as the star recovers.

Ian McKellen’s team, as well as Noel Coward Theatre, released a statement after the fall, detailing the celebrity will ‘make a speedy and full recovery’, adding he is in ‘good spirits’.

At first, spectators believed it was part of the performance, as Ian McKellen was circling a battle scene when the fall took place. He was facing the Prince of Wales and Henry Percy when he went to the near of the front of the stage.

But he cried out in pain and staff rushed in to provide him aid.

One witness, Paul Critchley, told BBC News it was a ‘shock’ to see Ian McKellen fall off stage  “directly in front of the audience”.

The Hobbit star plays Sir John Falstaff in the Shakespeare adaptation, which consists of Henry IV, Parts 1 and 2. The play is set to continue performances until the end of the month before moving across the country, including Brighton and Birmingham.
