Sinéad O’Connor has been nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame alongside other music icons, including Cher who has turned down the honor.
The Irish singer, who passed away in July of last year, shot to fame in 1985 for her hit Nothing Compares To U. O’Connor, who was also an avid activist, died at age 56 from “natural causes” a coroner’s report concluded.
15 acts have been nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and will then be narrowed down to a smaller number before being inducted. Finalists are chosen by a public vote and 1000 industry experts, with winners being announced in April.
The ceremony this year will take place at the venue in Cleveland, Ohio.
Music stars are only eligible after 25 years following the release of their debut record.
But not all nominees want the recognition from the Hall of Fame, with Cher, who is on this year’s list, speaking out over the ‘snub’ last year.
She came out to say she’d never join even if she was paid a “million dollars”.
“I’m never going to change my mind. They can just go you-know-what themselves.” She added.
Ozzy Osbourne also graces the list of nominees for his solo work but has already been inducted for his career with the group Black Sabbath. If he is inducted solo, he’ll become the 27th inductee and join a group of artists who have been included more than once. Others on this elite list include Stevie Nicks, Tina Turner and all four members of The Beatles.
The rock star was “deeply honored” over the nomination, saying it was something he “could never have imagined”.
Eric Clapton is the only star to be inducted three times, for his work with Cream, The Yardbirds and his solo career.
British brand Oasis is on the list for the first time, but due to the brothers’ long-term feud, it’s unlikely fans will see a reunion of the original group at the ceremony and perform if they are inducted. They disbanded in 2009.
John Sykes, Chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation said: “This remarkable list of Nominees reflects the diverse artists and music that the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame honours and celebrates.”
