An American woman was found chained to a tree ‘screaming’ in a forest in India.
The US native, Lalita Kayi was found a week ago in the forests of Sindhudurg district after shepherds heard her cries for help. They called police who came to saw off the chain and rescue her.
She was completely emaciated and was rushed to hospital for treatment. Her health has since improved and on Friday was moved to a psychiatric facility for more treatment.
She told police in a written statement that her husband left her there.

The woman said he ‘chained her [to the tree in India] and left her in the forest to die without food or water’.
Officers are searching for her husband in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, but the mystery of what happened is still unsolved.
Pandurang Gawkar was taking his cattle to graze in the forest when he heard a “woman screaming loudly”.
He said: “The sound was coming from the forest on the side of the mountain. When I went there, I saw that one of her legs was tied to a tree. She was screaming like an animal. I called other villagers and the local police.”
Cops found a copy of her passport on her, which said she was an American citizen. They also found an Aadhaar card, a unique ID for Indians, which stated her address as Tamil Nadu.
They ruled out theft as motive as she had a mobile phone, a tablet, and 31,000 rupees ($370).
It’s said she’s lucky she was found when she was, as the dense forest is vast and the shepherd could have chosen another area for cattle grazing that day.
Ms Kayi was believed to have worked as a ballet dancer and yoga practitioner in the US and moved to India 10 years ago where she met her husband. Police say they think the pair fell out out at some point.

The woman claimed she went 40 days without food and water while tied to the tree in India. Through scribbling notes on a pad to officials, she blamed her husband.
She also alleged she’d been given an “injection for extreme psychosis” and it locked her jaw and she couldn’t drink water.
“I am a victim and survived. But he ran away from here,” she wrote.
Police are searching for her husband, and are looking for clues in the mobile phone and tablet found with the woman.
